Nowadays, almost everybody is a user of a social network or web application. Almost everyone has an account or more in the Internet for different purposes: keep in touch, share information, pictures, aggregate content, etc. These are some of the most popular ones and seem a must, at least for some people:

“FriendFeed is a real-time feed aggregator that consolidates the updates from social media and social networking websites, social bookmarking websites, blogs and micro-blogging updates, as well as any other type of RSS/ Atom feed.” This tool helps you find and collect relevant information on the Web. It was created by Google. It has about one million visitors each month.

Seesmic is a web application that was created at first to make video loadings easier. It was created by the French Loic Le Meur. Now, has another use which is to aggregate content from from other social networks like twitter.

“WordPress is an open source blog publishing application powered by PHP and MySQL which can also be used for basic content management. It has many features including a user-friendly workflow, a rich plugin architecture, and an advanced templating system.” It was produced by Matt Mullenweg and first appeared in the year 2203. Right now, it has over 200 million users. WordPress has atemplating system, which includes widgets that can be rearranged without editing PHP or HTML code, as well as themesthat can be installed and switched between. It got a prize in 2007 (Packt Open Source CMS Award) and another one in the past 2009 (best Open Source CMS Award).

Flikr is place in the Web which enables you to share pictures and videos with your friends. It is very popular, hosting over 4 million images, and has its own behavior regulations. It was created by Ludicorp, a Canadian company that launched it in 2004. “Early versions of Flickr focused on a multiuser chat room called FlickrLive with real-time photo exchange capabilities. There was also an emphasis on collecting images found on the web rather than photographs taken by users. The successive evolutions focused more on the uploading and filing backend for individual users and the chat room was buried in the site map. It was eventually dropped as Flickr’s backend systems evolved away from the Game Neverending’s codebase.” It offers Free accounts and Pro accounts: which have different policies and different capacities of uploading photos.

According to what the Wikipedia says Twitter is “a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers.”

It was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey and since then has gained more and more popularity and it is ranked as one of the 50 most popular websites worldwide by Alexa’s web traffic analysis. It is also called the “SMS of Internet”

But Twitter is much more than a social network. These days, Twitter is a very profitable concept for a business, for example. As Bridget Wright says “To follow a company, any company on Twitter is not difficult to do at all. As a matter of fact, companies want and encourage other Twitterers to follow them. There is no other more creative way to gain organic followers or those who are genuinely interested in your business or product.” Companies offer deals and discounts through Twitter and even if they do not sell their products the first time; they have already set up connections with potential buyers.

It has also other uses. It is being used in education as well. Universities of all around the world are taking advantage of this tool. For instance, it is being used in the subject of Digital Resources Management of the University of Deusto, to make comments on the themes of that day’s lecture.

“Metadata is “data about data”, of any sort in any media. Metadata has been with us since the first librarian made a list of the items on a shelf of handwritten scrolls. The term “meta” comes from a Greek word that denotes “alongside, with, after, next.” More recent Latin and English usage would employ “meta” to denote something transcendental, or beyond nature. Metadata, then, can be thought of as data about other data. It is the Internet-age term for information that librarians traditionally have put into catalogs, and it most commonly refers to descriptive information about Web resources.

A metadata record consists of a set of attributes, or elements, necessary to describe the resource in question. For example, a metadata system common in libraries — the library catalog — contains a set of metadata records with elements that describe a book or other library item: author, title, date of creation or publication, subject coverage, and the call number specifying location of the item on the shelf.”

An initiative that deals with metadata is called Dublin Core Metadata Initiative.

“DCMI traces its roots to Chicago at the 2nd International World Wide Web Conference, October 1994. Yuri Rubinsky of SoftQuad (who chaired panels regarding the future of HTML and Web authoring tools) along with Stuart Weibel and Eric Miller of OCLC (who were presenting papers about scholarly publishing on the Web and leading discussions on the delivery of Web-based library services) had a hallway conversation with Terry Noreault, then Director of the OCLC Office of Research, and Joseph Hardin, then Director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). This discussion on semantics and the Web revolved around the difficulty of finding resources (difficult even then, with only about 500,000 addressable objects on the Web).

Their initial brainstorming lead to NCSA and OCLC holding a joint workshop to discuss metadata semantics in Dublin, Ohio, March 1995. At this event, called simply the “OCLC/NCSA Metadata Workshop”, more than 50 people discussed how a core set of semantics for Web-based resources would be extremely useful for categorizing the Web for easier search and retrieval. They dubbed the result “Dublin Core metadata” based on the location of the workshop. Since that time conferences and workshops have been held in England, Australia, Finland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Italy, and the United States.”

The last international Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications has taken place this last October in Seoul, Korea. In this conference they have mainly focused on linked data and the enabling of the Semantic Web. Conference participants have explored the conceptual and practical issues in breaking the constraints of data silos and connecting pieces of data, information, and knowledge.

Some of the tutorials have been on the following topics:

- Interoperability options in a complex Web of data

- Anchoring the Semantic Web: The Evolution of Dublin Core

- Linked Data and Users in Library – Does the library communicate efficiently

- Transforming, Mapping, and Merging KOS – Methodologies and Challenges

As the Wikipedia says “Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to share, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren’t shared, merely bookmarks that reference them.” Users organize their resources by tags (keywords) and there is no need to download the resource itself.

The term “Social Bookmarking” was invented by Delicious (then called del.icio.us) in 2003 and was the first using tags. However, back in 1996 the concept of shared online bookmarks already existed. Since then, many other companies have launched other bookmarking services, such as, Citeulike or Connotea.

These social bookmarks have the advantage that all the classification of the resources is done by humans instead of machines. Besides, a ranking of the best resources is done by the criteria of the users since they themselves are who level the resources.

On the other hand, they have some disadvantages too. There are no standard keywords and no standard for the structure of such tags. Therefore, tags may have spelling mistakes that lead to inexact results. Moreover, there is not any mechanism that connects similar or related concepts of tags.

These are some useful definions of the field of translation:

Machine Translation: sometimes referred to by the acronym MT, is a sub-field of computational linguistics that investigates the use of computer software to translate text or speech from one nartural language to another.

Machine Aided Translation:I’is a form of translation wherein a human translator translates texts using computer software designed to support and facilitate the translation process.

Some advanced machine-aided translation solutions include controlled machine translation (MT). Integration of MT into computer-assisted translation has been implemented in various ways by various parties. Although this type of technology is neither widely known nor available to individual translators, carefully-customized user dictionaries based on correct terminology significantly improve the accuracy of MT, and as a result, they improve the efficiency of translation process.

“The Framework for Machine Translation Evaluation in ISLE is a resource that helps MT evaluators define contextual evaluation plans. FEMTI consists of two interrelated classifications or taxonomies: the first one lists possible characteristics of the contexts of use that are applicable to MT systems. The second one lists the possible characteristics of an MT system, along with the metrics that were proposed to measure them.”

The main caharacteristics of the traslation task are:

-Assimilation: Its purpose is to monitor a (relatively) large volume of texts produced by people outside the organization, in (usually) several languages.

-Dissemination: this has the purpose of delivering to others a translation of documents produced inside the organization.

Communication: The ultimate purpose of the communication task is to support multi-turn dialogues between people who speak different languages. The translation quality must be high enough for painless conversation, despite possible syntactically ill-formed input and idiosyncratic word and format usage.
